Our goal every game is to have our pitchers throw a shutout. You can’t lose if the other team can’t score. There are 3 things a pitcher has to do to throw a shutout and none of them require the ability to throw a certain velocity. When our pitchers work out to add velocity, we really want them to focus on pitching shutouts.
3 THINGS NECESSARY TO THROW A SHUTOUT:
- Eliminate the walks.
- Stop the running game.
- Prevent the long-ball extra-base hit.
MEANS OF ACHIEVING OUR GOALS
Goal #2 – Stop the Running Game
- Develop a great move to all bases.
- Go to the plate quickly, delivering the ball to the catcher in 1.4 seconds or less.
- That is, from the time you start home until the ball hits the catcher’s glove, it should take 1.4 seconds or less.
- Know all pickoff plays and signals and use them effectively at the proper time.
- Master all the techniques of working over runners.
- Utilize the 3B-man to tell you when to throw over to 1B and at what point.
Master the following:
1. Great moves to 1B.
LHP RHP
- Quick drop and toss. Straight move from the 3 positions.
- Regular Move Old Dominion move (heel up and go).
- Super Move Open shoulder moves.
- Deep Breath move.
2. Great move to 2B, both regular and reverse pivot.
3. Straight move to 3B.
4. Fake to 3B, throw to 1 B.
5. The Quick Pitch
6. The Soupy Shuffle.
7. Freeze-framing.
8. No look & go
9. Lift and turn simultaneously with a man on 2B.
10. Step off if the runner has a great lead.
- At all times be conscious of the runner’s speed and importance.
- Follow up any straight moves to 1B that are close with an open move from the same position.
- Always check the runner on 3B before starting your windup.
- Don’t split your concentration. Once you decide to throw home, pick up the glove and go quickly to the plate, and forget the runner.
