Having met or worked with major league stars and high draft choices — both hitters and pitchers — I can testify that they all had exceptional grip strength, to a man

Hand and forearm strength has to be a factor in producing bat speed and pitching velocity, otherwise, these first-round studs wouldn’t all have these vice-like grips. To ignore grip strength or buy into the premise that great hitters don’t use their hands in hitting is a definite mistake.

Here are some of the things we do to increase hand and forearm strength:

  1. Med Ball Tosses & Catches
  2. Sledge Hammer Chops to a Truck Tire
  3. Baseball swings at a Tire Stack or Hanging Tire with Top hand, bottom hand, and both hands
  4. Chin-ups on a chin-up bar
  5. Hanging for 60 seconds or more on a Chin up Bar
  6. Hand Speed Drills with a Speed Stick
  7. Squeeze rubber balls with each hand

There are dozens of other hand and forearm strength exercises on the internet but the idea is to make sure you emphasize GRIP STRENGTH in your training plan. We measure our players every month with a hand dynamometer.

Grip Strength

It’s important that you work on both hands so that your strong hand does not overpower your weak hand.  Top-hand dominance is a major cause of wrist rolling and hitting around the ball.
